Looking back at last week’s draw against Sligo, we had kept them quiet all game so was conceding the equaliser in the dying minutes a tough blow to take?
“It was, because I think it was the only time they entered our box in the whole second half, so to concede from it was a little bit of a tough one to take but that’s what happens in football. We had enough possession and probably should have put the game to bed by then but once you get into the last five minutes you’d be hoping to see it through.”
Our focus this week is our second last home game of the season against DLR Waves. We came away with a 4-0 win the last time the two sides met in the All Island Cup back in April, but what can be expected from this clash?
“I think it’s going to be very similar to last Saturday. DLR are very similar in that they go player for player around the pitch, they’re hardworking and they try to make it as difficult as possible for you to try and play your football. I’m expecting a very similar game to last week and I’m just hoping that we can take some lessons from last week and put them into play this weekend.”
DLR have had a similar season to ourselves, with a lot of ups and downs. They’ll be looking to take 3 points home this weekend, so what areas of their play do we need to shut down in order to take the win for ourselves?
“I think Aisling Meehan up top has been a good addition to them. She’s done well with the Irish underage team, she scored a hattrick over in Portugal only a couple of weeks ago, so she’s going to be a threat. Abbie Brophy has come back after being at Wexford and she adds another attacking threat to them. We have to be mindful of their threats, but also try to focus on ourselves and our strengths and trying to make sure that we try to create some good chances for ourselves.”
Áine O’Gorman got our goal last week and also got on the scoresheet in that 4-0 win against DLR, so we’ll be hoping she can do more of the same this weekend. You’ve spoken about her so many times, but she really has stepped up when we need a goal and led the team both on and off the pitch this season.
“Yeah, I think that’s why I call her ‘skip’ and that’s why she’s the captain. She leads both on and off the pitch. When things haven’t been going our way this year, it’s very easy to go and feel sorry for ourselves but she’s the one that turns up and does her work week in, week out. She sets the right example and I wish I could go and sign twenty Áine O’Gormans. She really is a top class player that really doesn’t get the credit she deserves.”
Did everyone come out of last week ok or are there any new injury worries?
“No new injury worries, full squad to pick from, obviously apart from Jess Hennessy who’s now gone. Other than that it’s a full team. Everyone has trained well this week and are all ready to go.”
